The Cellular Foundation of Sleep: 5 Mineral Deficiencies No One Really Talks About

Nearly a decade ago, I was sort of “on the floor” asking WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME? I couldn’t sleep well, energy was totally off, and the list is long because my body was saying PURIFY ME AND GIVE ME WHAT I NEED!

That feeling of “WHAT IS GOING ON!” pushed me to do this after working with many holistic and more traditional wellness paths: I was to learn for myself on such powerful levels and build a framework that honors the truth that we are not isolated, separated beings. We are vibrational beings that need to be seen on every layer and level. That’s why I pursued eight years of deep study: a master herbalism degree program, vibrational wellness certifications with herbs and flower essences, ongoing homeopathy training that will span years to come.

As an example, each herb, flower essence, or homeopathic remedy addresses a different layer or aspect of our multidimensional nature. But there is a DEEPER layer that the “more traditional natural pathways” don’t address.

The Root Cause Protocol was provided to me in book format, and then what followed was the formal certification training with the Root Cause Protocol Institute in 2024.

During that training, my eyeballs popped out of my head!

OF COURSE!

ALL of the natural remedy modalities (herbs, homeopathy, and other vibrational medicine aspects) needed to be threaded WITH the Root Cause Protocol’s teaching on REMINERALIZATION. That was a missing foundation…

At a super basic level, our body needs COHERENT water (living, pure, mineral-rich water), minerals to help enzymes fire properly and keep the body humming, and chemical/poison-free, beautiful, nourishing WHOLE food.

I realized over these years, as I give my body what it needs every day, one reason my body “fell over” a decade ago is that, as mammals, our body’s restoration is calling for similar things that the Earth needs, too.

Regenerative Farming is becoming increasingly popular, and so that SAME practice is what our bodies need, too! This includes animal bodies… mammals need specific minerals, and every living thing in this world needs LESS poison within it, indeed.

The soil is Earth’s cellular tissue, and we are living expressions of that soil. And our cells are our internal soil, and they MUST have minerals to function. The past 150 years of industrial agriculture and the poisons that seep into city waters, our air, and food have systematically depleted the purity of what once was. Just as Earth’s soil needs regeneration, so do we.

Every healing modality works better (deeper, faster, more completely, and stays embodied LONGER) when the mineral scaffolding is intact, and when we have the RIGHT water in our bodies, and the right foods. Without that super simple foundation, we’re trying to heal mineral-starved organic cellular technology across all those vibrational layers.

Today, I sleep deeply (when external things don’t wake me up, because let’s face it, THAT happens as does mental chatter at times), but my body knows how to enter deep rest. I feel Vital Life Force flow powerfully from within. That’s what restored mineral scaffolding does. It is the WIRING for our entire physical form; it doesn’t just “fix symptoms,” it rebuilds the foundation for Life itself to move through you on every dimension.

This changed everything I comprehended about why people or animals are suffering more so than ever before.

Throughout, I’ll provide some research that is a tiny portion of what was part of the training I received at RCP and are great ones to go find and research if you’d like.

Beyond External Noise: What’s Really Happening When Sleep is Elusive

We all know the obvious sleep disruptors: snoring partners, barking dogs, street noise, mental chatter, etc. These are real, and they don’t help.

But there’s a more profound depletion happening inside the body that makes one vulnerable to every single one of those external triggers. These are root causes that many don’t know about, and they’ve been documented in medical literature for nearly a century (isn’t that crazy!?).

The cellular foundation of sleep…

1. Chronic Magnesium Depletion

Under any form of stress (physical, emotional, nutritional, or electrical), a mammal’s body loses magnesium as a direct metabolic response. Every mammal on this earth has this happen, and Dr. Hans Selye proved this in 1958 at the University of Chicago, coining the term “fight or flight” and documenting the mineral cascade that follows every stress response.

Dr. Mildred Seelig spent decades expanding this research, publishing her definitive findings in 1994 in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition (13(5):429-446). Her conclusion: magnesium deficiency is recognized as the precursor to inflammation, and chronic stress is the primary mechanism of magnesium loss.

This process, called the Magnesium Burn Rate (MBR), means that every argument, every deadline, every worry, every physical injury, every emotional wound you’ve carried has been systematically depleting the magnesium reserves.

Magnesium governs 3,751 enzyme processes in your body. When you’re deficient, your nervous system cannot downregulate into parasympathetic (rest and digest) mode. Your cells cannot produce the calming neurotransmitters required for deep sleep. Your body remains in a state of hypervigilance, which is why the slightest noise jolts you awake.

2. Copper Deficiency Blocking Energy Production at the Cellular Level

Your mitochondria, the energy factories inside every cell, require bioavailable copper to function. To get nerdy for a minute, specifically Complex IV (Cytochrome c Oxidase) in the electron transport chain contains three copper atoms and is 100% copper-dependent for the final step of ATP energy production.

When copper is deficient, the cells cannot efficiently convert oxygen into cellular energy. This creates a state of cellular exhaustion that manifests as:

  • Inability to reach deep sleep stages

  • Waking frequently throughout the night

  • Feeling unrested even after 8+ hours

  • Daytime fatigue despite “adequate” sleep

Copper deficiency has been the #1 mineral deficiency affecting both soil and human health for approximately 80 years, since industrial farming began depleting soil of copper and the food fortification industry started flooding our system with synthetic iron (which antagonizes copper).

The MAGICKAL Ceruloplasmin Connection

This was a PROFOUND uncovering provided by the RCP Institute training I’ve received. Ceruloplasmin is the master copper-binding protein in your blood, providing at least 20 different enzymatic functions beyond iron regulation. Production of ceruloplasmin requires:

  • Bioavailable copper from whole food sources (grass-fed beef liver, pasture-raised egg yolks, wild-caught seafood, etc.)

  • Retinol (true Vitamin A from animal sources) to “load” the copper into ceruloplasmin

  • Adequate magnesium for the synthesis process

When ceruloplasmin is low or dysfunctional, unbound iron accumulates in tissues, creating oxidative stress (cellular “rust”) that prevents the body from entering restorative sleep states.

3. Iron Dysregulation Creating Oxidative Stress

This is where conventional medicine has it backward. Low serum iron doesn’t mean iron deficiency. It usually indicates iron dysregulation, in which iron is trapped in tissues (creating oxidative stress) while blood levels of iron only APPEAR low. So, when you haven’t lost TONS of blood, and your doctor says “you have anemia”… well, that isn’t the case. WHY? Because iron hides in tissues and is not being ordered around by the copper, and why it doesn’t appear in the blood… this is a big deal.

I learned this in my Master Herbalism degree programs with Wild Rose College of Herbal Medicine: Copper is the general of the body, and iron is the foot soldier. Copper, when bioavailable and able to function like it needs to, orders iron around. When that can’t happen, iron runs amok. Copper wanders. We’ve got a big issue of the body not being able to function like it KNOWS how to.

Imagine you’re overloaded with iron in tissues a doctor cannot see, and then they say, “Here, have MORE iron.” Imagine what that does further to the body AT THE CELLULAR LEVEL…

When copper-dependent ceruloplasmin is insufficient, the body cannot properly regulate iron through ferroportin (this is the only iron export protein in the body).

This causes iron to accumulate in:

  • Mitochondria (blocking energy production)

  • Brain tissue (disrupting neurotransmitter balance)

  • Liver (impairing detoxification pathways)

  • Heart tissue (creating cardiovascular stress)

This stored iron creates reactive oxygen species (ROS), essentially cellular rust, that keeps your body in a state of chronic inflammation. Inflammation is not the “thing” but it does prevent the parasympathetic nervous system from activating, which means true restorative sleep becomes VERY hard.

4. Retinol Deficiency Preventing Cellular Repair During Sleep

Retinol (true Vitamin A from animal sources) is required for ceruloplasmin to function properly. A landmark 1978 study by Hodges showed an 80% correlation between retinol levels and hemoglobin production, while showing NO correlation between iron supplementation and hemoglobin.

Even more revealing: adding iron caused a LOSS of hemoglobin, while adding retinol caused hemoglobin to spike. This has been confirmed in 31 subsequent studies.

Retinol is essential for the following:

  • Loading copper into ceruloplasmin (making it bioavailable)

  • Gene expression and cellular repair during sleep

  • Immune system regulation

  • Maintaining epithelial tissue integrity (including the gut lining)

Sleep is when your body performs its deepest cellular repair. Without adequate retinol, this process cannot be completed, leaving things in a perpetual state of incomplete regeneration.

  • Hodges (1978). Retinol-hemoglobin correlation study

  • Chen et al. (2008). Documentation that the retina produces 8x the ceruloplasmin of the liver

5. Unresolved Emotional Stress Keeping You in Fight-or-Flight

Physical mineral depletion cannot be separated from emotional and spiritual depletion. The body doesn’t distinguish between a physical threat and an emotional wound. Both trigger the same fight-or-flight response, both deplete magnesium, and both prevent the vagal nerve from activating parasympathetic mode (REST).

Unresolved emotions create what the Root Cause Protocol framework calls “fears,” not just energetic blocks, but those stagnant emotions then create a relentless Magnesium Burn Rate in the physical body. Your body uses magnesium to manage anxiety and stress responses. When emotional stagnation remains unprocessed, your nervous system never fully releases from the stress state.

This undercurrent of emotional elements not MOVING keeps your body in a heightened state of alert, diverting metabolic resources instead of allowing cellular repair and regeneration.

The Integration: This is why flower essences are a HUGE part of what I do in my practice, as it helps SO MUCH that it feels just like magick! BUT… layering it with the truth of how we regenerate at the cellular level is also key. One can then allow the body to process and release stored in the emotional layer that can begin to speak further to the body, and when the body is ready, permitting the nervous system to downregulate and RELAX (that equates to moving into more and more coherence).

The Deeper Truth: Your Body Is Divine and Organic Cellular Technology

What’s happening in poor sleep goes far beyond “lacking melatonin” or “needing better sleep hygiene.” The difference between someone who “sleeps well” and someone who lies awake for hours after the slightest sound isn’t willpower or genetics. It’s about mineral status, metabolic capacity, whether the body gets true nourishment, and whether its cellular technology has the resources to maintain parasympathetic dominance during rest.

In fact, the body is supposed to make melatonin, so taking it only tells your body, “I don’t need to make it,” and creates a looping pattern. So, the KEY is to provide the wiring the body needs to MAKE the things it can, naturally and organically.

Your body is divine cellular technology clothed in flesh, operating on precise mineral ratios and enzymatic processes that have been disrupted by 80+ years of things like this:

  • Soil mineral depletion from industrial farming

  • Food fortification with synthetic iron (which antagonizes copper) and other toxins and genetically modified foods where some even have chemicals already embedded into them at the SEED level

  • Synthetic vitamin supplementation (which depletes cofactors)

  • Chronic stress without adequate mineral replenishment

  • Glyphosate exposure (which chelates copper and manganese)

When your cellular technology lacks the mineral foundation it requires, it won’t complete the processes that deep sleep demands: ATP production, neurotransmitter synthesis, tissue repair, detoxification, immune system regulation, and hormonal balance.

The Timeline to Expect

This is dependent on how one lives their life. Every body is TOTALLY unique. One doesn’t really just “fix sleep.” You’re restoring many, many years of mineral depletion, reversing many years of accumulated stress, and rebuilding the enzymatic pathways.
